Whereas, the thumbnails for the png and gif are all the same
'placeholder' tile.
Presumably there is something telling WE to use each ico itself as
the thumbnail, but nothing telling it to use the png and gif
pictures themselves in a similar manner.
The png and gif files can be seen if 'tiles' is selected as the
view, but then they are all tiny compared with the handy way the
ico files are displayed in thumbnail view.

Hope that's clearer.

No guarantees but It may be worth a try to
repair your image associations.

Repair image file type associations in Windows XP
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/imgassofix.htm

Windows® XP File Association Fixes
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Also it may help to go to...Start / Run and type
(or copy/paste):

regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll
(yes, the space after the 2 and the space
after the i is required)

Press...Enter...

You should see a dialog box that says:
DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll succeeded

Good luck...

Are you suggesting that my png icons are supposed to show up the same
way as the ico ones?
I don't want to muck about with blanket fixes for file associations
when some of my associations are deliberately not the standard ones.
However, I will have a look at your links: but won't be able to get
back to you for a week or so as I'm just off for a break.

Thanks once again,

S

I'm sorry you think I am suggesting that
you "muck about" with your system.

Good luck finding a solution.

No offence intended,
Your advice is always useful.

Away for a few days now, so will try again later.
