No, you do not need to install the software for your camera to use
a memory card reader--that's actually a major advantage for those who
have multiple cameras.

You don't mention which OS your computer is running.  If it is XP (SP2)
or Vista, you shouldn't need to install any driver to get your card
reader working--that should happen automatically when you first plug it
in.

But you should plug in the reader *without a card in it* the first time
to allow XP or Vista to find it and install the appropriate driver.  You
will see some messages, ending with something to the effect that "Your
new hardware is ready to use."

After that, you can insert your memory cards and access them.

Not every card reader can read every size card.  Make sure that the
card reader can support your memory card and its size.  Also, the
"generic" no-name card readers are not all reliable.

Good point--this is particularly true of the SD cards larger than
2GB (SDHC cards), which can only be read by readers made in the
last year or so.

Yes and some SDHC readers only can read upto 8GB SDHC media. SDHC is
reported to be getting 16GB and 32GB soon.
