Re: Duplicating photo file names

Another approach that is quite easy to use in this world of large media
cards is: When you've finished copying your photos from the card to
your computer (and made backups!), erase *all except the last* photo you
took from the media card.

This will cause virtually all cameras to continue sequencing from the
last photo number, making merging of multiple shoots quite simple.

Some cameras also have "sequential numbering" as a menu option, so
you can force sequential photo numbers even with different media cards.

Note, this is not a replacement for different folders, but a useful
adjunct. For example, from time to time I take another photo of the
scene from my deck. I store all of these in the same folder (by topic
and year), so it would be disruptive if photo numbers were duplicated
by chance. Sequential numbering avoids this problem (until I take more
than a billion photos with this camera ;-).

BTW, although some people recommend erasing photos only by reformatting
in the camera (which is, of course, completly unselective), I have never
had a problem requiring reformatting. If I did, I would reformat and
then copy my highest numbered photo *back* to the card!

Try to avoid this confusion. Instead of copying all your files under a single folder "My Pictures", make new folders for each batch of pictures.
Open the My Pictures folder. Then click on File and New and Folder. You get a New Folder, click with your mouse in the New Folder box and then type in what you want for a name. A good idea is to have YYYY_MM_DD followed by a descriptive name. For examples:
2006_04_24_ Cars
2006_04_24_ Monopoly
This way your folders will be displayed in chronological order and you can have the same file name in different folders with no interference.
So make a new folder first and then download the photo to it.
If you get the message that a file already exist and you are asked if you want to replace it, and you answer YES, you will be replacing the old file by the new one and there is no way to get the old one back.

oh yes forgot to say, once the car has been renamed as such, the monopoly
board pic is there, but the pic of the car has disappeared.

Hello all,

We've been taking some pics for selling on ebay via the digital camera. We
load them into the pc via a usb connection, save to My Pictures then delete
the pics from the memory card.

Then we'll take some more pics, and as the camera automatically creates the
file names starting (presumably) from 1 again.

Then when we go to load in the 2nd lot of pics, it asks if we want to
overright the file names, or not save them. i click overright.

then when i go into explorer, double click on thumbnail pic of (e.g.) a
model car, it opens up the pic to reveal (e.g.) a monopoly board. presumably
this is due to having the same file name.

when this has previously happened, we simply copied the (e.g.) monopoly
board and renamed it monopoly. this has created 2 separate thumbnail
pictures, one of car, one of monopoly. all sorted.

however today however many times the monopoly pic is renamed, the car still
shows on the thumbnail but the monolpoly board does not. then if you click on
the car to rename it "car" the file name changes but the thumbnail pic
changes to monopoly board!!!!

confused?? me too, please help! i don't want to retake all the photos.

Thanks for help.
