It's a possibility that something has damaged/corrupted your User Accounts. Did you try a full system search to see
if the files could be located?
I would suggest a full system virus scan using the most recent definitions. Also...
the following programs can be useful in
maintaining a clean system:
AdAware, Spybot, MS AntiSpyware, A-Squared, CCleaner.
Maybe the entries in your Event Viewer would give you some idea what happened.
