Did you buy the computer new or seconds hand?
Some Dell computers have a hidden partition containing a backup copy of the operating system and some rely on recovery disks. That is why I am asking about the model. When you try to boot you may see a reference to Emergency Recovery. If you see this then by pressing the relevant key during the boot it allows you to restore the operating system to factory settings. This wipes everything from the drive,. i.e. programmes and data, but gives you a working computer.

its a desktop, sorry but i am not where the computer is right now, it
is 3 years old, is it possible to just somehow format and then
install xp? if so, how do i do this with no comand promt or way to
tell it to formatt? i have been looking on the how to format windows
at the microsoft site & there is a download for xp set up disks so do
u think if i downloaded thease, and then loaded them into the sick
machine, that i might either be able to just format & go from there?
Is the Dell a laptop or desktop? With the model number I can locate
the Manual?
How old is the computer?
The normal to run chkdsk would be from the Recovery Console but you
cannot use that method with a Dell.

What is the Dell model?
Do you have important data on the drive you need to recover?

0x00000024: NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
A problem occurred within NTFS.SYS, the driver file that allows the
system to read and write to NTFS file system drives. There may be a
physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet
(IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard
drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of
drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest
running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file
system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup
utilities. Check the file properties of NTFS.SYS to ensure it
matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup,
CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.
