UNABLE TO DELETE DESKTOP SHORTCUT/FOLDER ICONS

Recently I sent my Dell Dimension 8400 for a major repair (new motherboard
and power supply) and in the meantime had it's hardisk transfered to another
XP based pc to continue with my daily works.
I got back the Dell today and re-install it's hard disk. System is running
ok but most of the shortcut icons on the desktop and folders are now blanks
i.e. without their contents or target. I've tried to delete these icons but
receive the following msg "Error Deleting File or Folder. Cannot delete <file
name> : Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use"
Disk is not full and the file concern is not in use. Could anybody tell me
what cause this to happen and how to get rid of the 'blank' icons from my
desktop and file folders?
