Sorry I forgot to add:
Checked event viewer no issues listed.
Ran numerous virus /spyware / malware / greyware scans from many websites..
Emptied temp files and rid any useless client’s files and then defragged.
Used sysinternals tool page defrag to assist with system files.
Made sure there were no unknown hardware devices listed in Device manager..
Took the manufacture diag cd to test CPU, Mem, HD etc. no problems there.
Researched is any of the hardware had any driver updates and made them.
Disabled system restore to see if this had any effect but no change in
performance.
Use the vendor cleanup tool to remove the av software and then reinstalled
it same crappy performance.
Tried a newer version number from the vendor but no change either.

Hi all...
We have 200 clients and they are all xp pro with sp2.
They are slow upon startup and logon everyday.
Using msconfig I found the culprit to be Symantec av 10.1.7.
When I disable the services related to this product xp flies.
Now I know I should take this matter up with the vendor but I thought I
might ask you all as well if anyone else had the same issue.
I have al ready optimize the av software to boost performance but it has no
effect.
The vendor is trying to work on this but they have yet to get a workaround
or solution...
I can probably disable the active scan feature but that will leave the pc at
risk...
Goggling this only point me to getting rid of this software brand and
getting a better or open source one.
We cannot afford any new software right now...
Open source option does not provide central monitoring or deployment…
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi,
We had a similar issue with Symantec products, so in the end we went
with Sophos instead.
This was not a cheap option however.
I'm afraid I do not know of any other solution - it seems symantec
products are well known for this.
You will also find that uninstalling symantec is not straightforward
either, we had to download a separate utility in order to successfully
remove it from our XP workstations - doing a normal uninstall crippled
the machines.
