Gerry,
Thanks for the info. I checked the device manager and found that the cdw/dvd
drive is not happy. And by coincidence, I took the error code from the event
viewer and googled it and it came up with a driver file pxhelp20.sys that is
used by some applications that can ause this error. They talk about removing
all references to this file and deleting it to resolve the issue, but I'm a
little leary of doing this as this is not my computer and I don't want to
break other apps that could be using it properly.
There are 23 files that are referenced as unsigned, the bulk of them start
with hp and I assume are from HP for this system. I don't see a way to copy
this list short of taking a screen shot - if you need it, I can provide it.
I'll take off the auto restart and let you know what the result is.
Rich.

The two Event ID: 1003 reports relate to a Stop (BSOD) errors and would
have caused the computer to automatically restart. If they have not
recurred today it may be the problem was resolved when you updated the
ATI driver yesterday. It is considered better practice to update third
party drivers by talking them from the third party site and not by using
Windows Update.
Disable automatic restart on system failure. This should help by
allowing time to write down the STOP code properly should they occur
again. Right click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop and select
Properties, Advanced, Start-Up and Recovery, System Failure and uncheck
box before Automatically Restart.
Background information on Stop Error message 0x8E

0x0000008E: KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
A kernel mode program generated an exception which the error handler
didn't catch. These are nearly always hardware compatibility issues
(which sometimes means a driver issue or a need for a BIOS upgrade).

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?
Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

Hope this helps.

I had previously checked the event viewer and found that the ati
video was having issues, so I updated the drivers via Windows Update
and that issue appears to be gone.
I have been told that some milk had been spilled on the keyboard at
one time, but this laptop seems to be working fine, but I have not
cracked the case to check to see if any had penetrated through to the
motherboard.
Thank your for your assistance.

What errors appear in Event Viewer?
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last
boot in normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please.
Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close
Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the
body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting
from
Event Viewer.

Hi,
I have a HP Pavilion dv5000 computer with 1GB RAM. When I boot up
the computer, it takes anywhere from 5 - 7 minutes to get to the
login prompt. I have cleaned up what I can with msconfig, though
many of those items haven't started up at this point.
I am also running bootvis to try to optimize the startup of the
computer. It has crashed the OS a few times already so this is a
very slow process.
Any suggestions on how I can proceed to determine what is making
this system boot so slowly?
TIA.
Rich.
