Gerald
What is the status of "Messenger Sharing USN Journal Reader service"?
Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Is it listed?
Windows Live Messenger is looking for it during the boot process and not
managing to start the Service. Do you use Windows Live Messenger?

You missed this part!
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the
System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last
boot in normal mode .
Errors two weeks ago are of no interest. To pinpoint a current
problem you need to concentrate on current information. Restart your
computer and see what errors are reported. They need to appear in
the 5 minute time frame.
I would dump System Mechanic!

What errors appear in Event Viewer?
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the
last boot in normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates
please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the
meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and
Description are important.
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and
double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which
appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and
close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste
into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from
Event Viewer.

antivirus full scan with McAfee today.
defraged and disk clean up performed this last weekend.
msconfig tells me there are 18 programs starting up
The number of autostarting programs is not important. *Which*
programs they are is what's important.
How much RAM do you have?
Is this behavior new, or has it always been slow to start?
If it's new, what have you changed recently?
Is it just slow in starting or is it slow in everything it does?
I found one driver for my creative webcam that I updated
not sure what other information to provide.
thanks for your help

black screen for 2 whole minutes then I get my desktop with
no icons for a further minute all in all it is almost 5
minutes before I can use the computer.

Windows XP Home Edition... Okay.
- Service pack level?...
- Running on an 400MHz processor with 64MB memory and a 10GB
HDD with less than 50MB free space?...
- Last full AntiVirus scan was performed on?... (with?...)
- Last full AntiSpyware scan was performed on?... (with?...)
- Hardware drivers are all current from the manufacturer of
each component (not Microsoft updates)?...
- Last disk cleanup and defragmentation was perfomed on what
date?...
- How many startup programs are loading?...
( In other words - more details, please. ;-) )
