Re: XP Home repair failed to install product catalogs - fatal erro

Try another copy of OEM XP Home CD. I have seen this happen if the CD is
scratched or marked in some way.

Also are you doing this repair from within windows or are you doing this by
restarting the computer and booting from the CD drive?

Thanks Leonard,

The Laptop is actually an older model. The only software I got with it is
the OEM XP Home CD. I will try contacting the MFG and see if they are any
help.

Thanks

I would show the computer to a professional technician before doing
something radical like erasing the hard disk. (That's what happens when
you use the computer manufacturer's recovery CDs or recovery partition.)

To recover files from a hard disk that won't boot, install the bad hard
disk as the second disk in a computer with a good copy of Windows. Use
the good copy of Windows to copy files from the bad hard disk.

Since every computer manufacturer creates their own recovery scheme, you
should ask HP for help in using their recovery CDs or partition. I'm
surprised this wasn't included in the instruction manual you received
with the computer.

An HP pavilion laptop with XP Home was failing to boot. When I tried in
Safe
Mode it was hanging after loading the MUP.sys files. I tired to repair
using
the system disc that came with the laptop. Now I get an error "setup

to install the product catalog" Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Anyone know how to deal with this? There are a couple of files I really
need
to get off this machine.

Thanks in advance to all who offer suggestions, whether they work or
not.
