You have complained that the process svchost is making excessive use of
your CPU. However, there are a number of entries for svchost on most
computers and you do not say, which one it is. Taking it further some of
the svchost processes are used by a number of applications so you may to
isolate which application from a group of applications is responsible
for the usage. The way forward is to download Process Explorer:
For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx
It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.
The Indexing Service. If it gets turned off and you have to turn it on
again the system will run slowly for a few days until the process of
rebuilding the index is complete. When working properly it should speed
up your system.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for your suggestion. I did use the live chat support to
get support from Symantec technical support. However, their solution
to me is to use selective startup to load only the MicroSoft and
Symantec basic services only. The machine I used is for development
and I have Visual Studio only so the SQL server services will not be
available if I use the selective startup. Actually, before the
problem, I have both SQL server and Postgresql database services on.
Although it is a solution but an inconvenience one. However, it
appears that the problem is cause by crash amongst the services. Is
there any tools to check on the crash or I have to disable the
service 1 by 1 and see which service caused that. By using this
methoid, I can identify one of the crash services but not the other.
With a development machine, the services are lengthy. If there is no
other alternative, it seems I have to try disabling services or
re-installing XP pro and install the software again until the system
crash again to see which services caused that. I am sorry I posted
again and I am afraid I need to work it out quick as I lost a
working date already and if the condition persists, I will lost more
and should I have no alternative to re-install XP, I will lost some
other days too. I would be very much appreciated if a quick solution
can be found. Thanks for your attention and possible help in
advance.
Yours sincerely,

My XP Professional (installed on an IBM T43 notebook) slowed down
suddenly. I did not install software recently.
When I check on the task manager, it is the svchost running
sometimes at 90+% and sometimes at 60-70%. It keeps on for more
than an hour. I checked the services and the Indexing Service is
disabled. Is there any reason for that?
I have Norton Internet Security and Norton System Works installed
helping me to check problems but none reported.
Facing this situation, what can I do to restore the previous
performance? Is it necessary to re-install the XP professional
again. I am sorry as I cannot work smoothly with the CPU usage
always at
100% for hours. I have to fix it reasonably quick or otherwise the
only alternative is to re-install the XP professional again.
Therefore, I would be appreciated if swift suggest will be
forwarded to me asap. Thanks for your attentions.
Yours sincerely,
Colin Chiang
