It always pays to keep trying until something either breaks completely or works. Glad to be able to help.

Thanks again... I had tried the latest driver from ATI/AMD for my AGP card and had exactly the same error in dxdiagnostic so I tried several other "older drivers" until i found one that worked well. My current installation of xpsp2 comes from a fully unattended installation CD which may be where the fault lies..
Searching google and forums gave me the impression that the latest ATI drivers do not work well with the ATI X1950pro so I used a much earlier driver. When I was updating from Microsoft I assumed the update for my graphics card was not so much a driver update as a microsoft compatibility update for the ATI driver. I was wrong. Since, what appears to be, the exact same error comming from ATI and microsoft update I would think the error lies with ATI. But, without evidence that someone with the exact same unattended settup disk that I used has no errors installing the latest ATI driver,...even then...cpu differences, hdd differences...etc, could make or break a solid explanation. This is leading to/bordering on the theory of relativity and i have less inportant things to do.
"Grand_Poobah" <yoohoo@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:evorJjkHIHA.1204@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxWhy did it fail? That is a good question. In my opinion sometimes the drivers released to M$ tend to be either Beta or in-process drivers. That means that they may not be finalized. Once completely tested, they will appear on the manufacturer's website.
Since it isn't a "real" M$ update (like KB-whatever) it wouldn't show up in the A/R programs panel.
Very glad everything worked out.

update for my ATI graphics card...
The Gory details:
No direct 3D...thx MS!All I can suggest is post-facto: Do NOT download or install DRIVER updates from M$ -- get them directly from the device manufacturer site.
