CHKDSK will not run on external drive.

I am running a Compaq Presario SR1710NX with Windows XP, SP2.
I have two external hard drives. On one of them (Drive M), CHKDSK works
just fine, but on my other external drive (Drive H), absolutely nothing
happens, even after rebooting my computer. When my computer reboots, it
goes directly into the regular Windows opening. (I hope that I didn't
confuse you with my description.) In other words, it simply boots up
normally.
Has anyone else had this problem with a external drive? I would appreciate
any help that anyone can give me.
