I have 2 issues with this pc I am working on and the first is that it
takes
5 minutes for the icons and system tray to load. The desktop wallpaper
loads right away, but not the other stuff.
Prefetch...cleaned, disk-cleanup....done, defrag...done, msconfig, startup
items were loaded one at a time and no problems, but when I did the same
for
Services, when I loaded those one at a time, the Shell Hardware Detection
service seemed to be the culprit. When I did not let it load, the desktop
and icons loaded right away, but it still took around 4 minutes for the
hourglass to disappear so we could proceed. I looked at that service and
it shows it is started automatically.
Along with this and I am wondering if the 2 things are one in the same
problem. We had to reload a wireless usb adapter, which is a routine
thing
we have to do everytime one of the children hookup their iPod and download
music and since the startup problem has started, we can't get the adapter
to
recognize the internet. I changed it out with a new one and it still does
not connect, but does talk with the router. The adapter does work fine
with
another pc that it is part of the network.
I would appreciate any suggestions. I found nothing on the MS support
Knowledge Base that follows along with this problem.
Thanks much!!!
What are the specs for the system, especially RAM quantity? Your 5
minute bootup time would not be unusual, for example, for a system
with only 128 mb and which was also infested with one or more
512 ram and 2.0g Mhz....................
Symantec/Norton products.
None of that stuff installed on this machine....
Here is a utility which may help you to detect what is taking the most
time during the startup:
Windows XP Boot logger: http://greatis.com/utilities/bootlogxp
Good luck
