I was finally able to obtain an MSI failure event log entry,
I compared this. to a "reference" media center machine's list of services
and configured the target to look like that reference, especially to reverse
the "disabled" services. An attempt was made to run the install with the
same results. However, when running using "run as" with the administrator
account, several errors concerning access were developed, And a log entry
was created.
Note, the "owner account" is also a member of the administrator group, so
I'm unclear as to why the owner account fails to install the software..
Log entry:

Not enough information provided. Can't help with what you given. From
start
menu open control panel, select performance and maintenance, select
adminstration tools, select event viewer, select application. Look for
red
entry and select it. On that page below the up and down errors is a cut
and
past icon , select that button and past either this newgroup entry or a
new
newgroup entry so that we have something to work with.

Attempting to install java.com's JRE results in a flat out failure.
Message
is "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the
package
exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to
verify that this is a valid windows installer package." User is an
administrator. Windows is xp (media center), service pack 2.
Windows Update also fails with error code 0x80072EFD, which is a firewall
or
network failure. The network is running just fine and the wirewall is
set
to "easy." or low. Automatic update was set to off.
I found several services disabled such as "help and support", and
"windows
installer."
I have no idea what is going on here. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jim
