menu open control panel, select performance and maintenance, select
adminstration tools, select event viewer, select application. Look for
red
entry and select it. On that page below the up and down errors is a cut
and
past icon , select that button and past either this newgroup entry or a
new
newgroup entry so that we have something to work with.

Unfortunately, there are no application or system event log entries for any
of this. Just a message from Windows installer that the package is invalid
and an error code from windows update.

I reinstalled windows installer 3.1 from the vendor's recovery CD-ROM to see
if WI was corrupted. Same problem. Vendor doesn't provide a "setup" CD,
just their recovery image CD. They also provide the ability to install
pre-canned fixes or reinstall components of the operating system. So I
can't simply do an XP "recovery" from the setup CD to reset the operating
system modules at the distribution level, followed by windows update to
reinstall all security patches. I would have to reformat the hard drive and
reload the vendor's original distribtuion image.

I believe that somebody "tuned" the system by deciding to turn off and
disable certain services as I found the "help and support" and "windows
installer" services disabled. I'm wondering is there are any other services
that windows needs to install packages or run windows update that are also
disabled. To the best of my knowledge, these two and their prerequesite
services are the only ones involved, but I could be wrong.

I've launched the java.com installer program on other computers and do not
see the problem, which proves that the package is not corrupted.

AV/Anti-spam/firewall/network security program is Trend Micro's PC-CILLIN,
which states that it is up-to-date. I would expect that a "security issue"
would cause a message to be issued, but no such message is issued from
PC-cillin.

I haven't run a rootkit detector program yet, but that's on my list of
things to do.

I have to admit, that I'm pretty well stumped with this one.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
