it freezes at the moment it says 'found new hardware'.
it will not do anything else until you restart, however long i leave it.

I understand that the system freezes but how *LONG* does it freeze? Have you just left it to it's own devices for a while (15 minutes?) just to see if it will come back of it's own accord? It could also be that the drivers load immediately when the modem is detected and THEN the system freezes (apparently) while drivers are initialized and the modem is checked out by the system. Some modems have quite lengthly checkout procedures involving quite a bit of "handshaking" between the operating system and the modem. Give it a chance to do it's job.
GP
--->the board supports usb2. the system freezes within seconds and the modem drivers never load as a consequence.
"GRAND_POOBAH" <iss_boss.delete@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:O28QqeegHHA.4916@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxDoes the modem require USB 2.0? Does your computer supply USB 2.0? I am wondering if the drives for the PCI modem may still be interfering somehow.
How long have you waited when the computer freezes? I have waited sometimes for as long as 10 minutes for just a keychain USB drive to become "recognized" and the drivers loaded for it. Then waited for another 5 minutes for the drive to become available for use. Maybe you might just go have a cup of tea and wait it out.
GP
--->it is a usb adsl modem.
i did have a pci modem but took it out without effect.
"GRAND_POOBAH" <iss_boss.delete@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:e03yhPegHHA.4368@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxDo you have any other modem software/drivers installed? Perhaps there is a conflict that isn't apparent while in Safe Mode, but comes up when you boot normally. It's tedious, but you might use MSCONFIG and enable one boot item at a time (rebooting in between) to see if anything there is conflicting. Sounds a lot like some sort of IRQ conflict to me. Is this a USB modem, or just a board plugged into a PCI slot? If PCI, then try another slot - this sometimes changes the IRQ assigned.
GP
done this.
i've tried old and new drivers.
"GRAND_POOBAH" <iss_boss.delete@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> wrote in message news:%23I2zNJegHHA.4872@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxwell i thought i'd sorted this but apparently not..
i have asus a7v400-mx me/b winXP home sp2. latest bios etc etc..
my speedtouch modem will not install and causes the system to freeze.
i have installed the drivers to the letter; start windows; plug modem in
(usb) and the system freezes instantly. remove the drivers and then plug the
modem in and windows looks for drivers without success and prompts for the
cd. i install from the cd and as soon as the drivers are installed the
system freezes again.
if i start in safe mode it does not freeze and the modem is visible in
device manager. i have the latest driver. i can install the modem in safe
mode no problem AND if i then restart the system it works!
only problem is if i shut down and then restart, it looks for the modem
again 'found new hardware' pops up in the systray.
this is confusing. if the modem is installed, why does it always 'find' it
when it restarts. it doean't do this for any other usb device.
as soon as it installs, the system freezes. i cannot get the system to
retain the driver/modem installation that i perform in safe mode. like i
say, if i restart from safe mode it will work. if i shut down and start
again it won't!
solution.... i can never turn my computer off again.
any ideas please.
thanks.
steve.
Could the drivers on the CD be an earlier version that those you would find on the web site for Speedtouch? Check with them and see.
