Re: Nasty Stop Errors and Restarts

How's your network cabling? I ask, because I've often seen hardware
issues such as failing HD present as randon STOP BSoDs, and not just
the disk-orientated (FATxx, NTFS) ones either.

well, something has been changed for the last 5-6 days, for the
better i hope. i finally was able to send 2 Err reports to MS, and
got *same* replies, saying- SmartLink device is the cause for the
problem, recommending upgrading its device manager.
now, i'm using an ADSL(1.5) connection, but for some reason the
old phone cable was still connected between the Line-Filter and
the P.C (internal NetDragon Modem). now, since there is no *valid*
upgrade for Smartlink modem, and it's not used anymore, i've
disconnected the cable, disabled the device and turned SmartLink
service(Slserv.exe) to manual. also did some cleanning with
Ad-Aware and installed IE-Spyad, for security.
well, i can say now, after 5 quiet days, that sudden Bsod's and
Restarts are gone(Tfoo-Tfoo, Touch wood etc). i say *sudden*,
because there are 1 or 2 sites that *i know* would cause me a Bsod.
these sites own dynamicaly Flash-rich pages, and today, indeed,
after a few seconds i had a Bsod, which i never had before:
BAD_POOL_HEADER with Stop-Err 0019. (no MS reply)
now, 2 weeks ago i installed Adobe Flash-Player 9 over the old
Macromedia Player 7. could that be the reason?

I'd also check HD with HD Tune from www.hdtune.com - any bad blocks on
the slow surface test is reason to replace HD irrespective on how
shiny SMART summary claims things to be.
HD bad blocks map to particular parts of the file system, so a bad
block within Internet or network code could appear to be related to
online contexts only.

HD Checked today with HD-Tune, with 0.0% bad blocks,
although one line in 'Health' tab came out "Yellow":

Current Worst Threshold Data
Status
Reallocated Sector Count 199 199 140 1
Ok

I take it you have firewall enabled? Malware can become more active
when online and can cause crashes.

Firewall is enabled.

The most "popular" BSOD is:
IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with stoperr 0A.
and a few of:
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL with other stoperrs.

Yep. Often those have nothing to do with what the description of the
errors would lead you to believe; they can be quite general.

IOW, they may tell you where the body dropped after it was shot, but
not tell you where the body was shot before staggering to a halt.

How's Safe Mode and normal Windows with MS Config suppression? Be
careful when testing the latter online, as the suppression of
3rd-party services and startup items may disable some defenses.

haven't checked yet Safe Mode. by MS Config suppresion, do you
mean *all* 3rd-party , including Security ones, such as NAV?
in fact, i have only 3 of that kind- Symantec, Nvidia and SoundMax.
i do control Start-up from time to time to check for changes.

thank you
