Windows XP monitor power-save feature craps out

I like to configure all of my computers to power down (not simply blank)
the monitor after n minutes of non-use. This feature is available in
control panel / display properties / screen saver / monitor power.
On one of my computers, this feature capriciously stops working, and
rather frequently too. I would like to fix this.
One thing I would like to try is to monitor all access to the Windows
registry that might affect the "monitor power" feature of Windows. My
tool of choice is the software "Process Monitor" available free from
sysinternals.com (now part of Microsoft).
I found that using the above-cited feature of control panel, many
different registry keys were accessed. These keys are scattered throughout
the registry tree. I think I need a full description of how this feature
is supported in the Registry, before I go and screw things up more.
Thanks for any suggestions!
