Check the Application and System logs in Event Viewer for Warning / Error Reports for a single session and post copies. Please do not post copies of Information Reports.
If there are no Reports in the System Log, albeit only Information Reports, for any session when the computer was running then this indicative that either Event Viewer has failed or it has been switched off.
No events appear in an event log. If there are no events in an event log, logging may be disabled on that log or the events may have been cleared by another user. To check whether a log is enabled, right-click the log, click Properties and check the Enable Logging option. To check whether the log was cleared, search the System log for an event with an ID value of 104. This event is generated when a log is cleared.
To reset an event log to default settings Open Event Viewer.
1.. In the console tree, click the log you want to reset.
2.. On the Action menu, click Properties.
3.. On the General tab, click Restore Defaults.
You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to reset an event log to the default settings.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.
HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us
Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you should double click for further information. You can copy using copy and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further information.

(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

It is to early to conclude that NIS is the fault, try to look in the
Event Viewer to see the History of Error messages on this Machine
and see what caused it and start to troubleshoot.
It is easy to say yes it is NIS, but NIS could be the Victim of
another bad programs or Hardware drives that not compatible with
Windows.
Clean up First then install NIS and see if the problem come back, if
it did then you know it is NIS at fault and the nearest Bin get the
honor!!.
Also back up you may End up doing a clean install,as it is the best
for long future usability and performance.

What should I look for in the event viewer?
This is my first excursion into event viewer?
How many events ought there be under the application heading?
(Which, I assume, is where you want me to be?) It looks like I have
a lot each day for the past couple of days. (The top of the window
lists 2504 events. The last event visible in the window is 11/6/06.)
The majority of these events have the blue 'i' in the white bubble
icon. (PLEASE tell me that it is normal to have a bunch of events
in here!) :-)
To my untrained eye, let me point out what I see and you can ask me
for the important details after I have made a fool of myself by
pointing out the stuff that is obviously not the problem! :-)
First, it seems every day 'Microsoft fax' produces two yellow !
warning signs. (Some days more than once, but each time it produces
two errors.) The first yellow warning says that "the Microsoft fax
service failed to initialize any assigned fax devices (virtual or
TAPI)." The second yellow warning says that "The outgoing routing
rule is not valid because it cannot find a valid device..." These
appear to be almost all of the events with the yellow warning icon.
There are sporadic events with the white 'X' on a red circle error
icon. These are almost all application hang.
Hopefully, with some direction, we can pinpoint the problem.
I have just run the Norton removal tool. I assume that some of these
Information events (blue 'i' on white bubble) are because of that.
The descriptions for some of these events say that the description
'cannot be found'. Due to removal?
I appreciate your patience and assistance.
JJ
