Re: bad_pool_header Blue Screen Upon Start Up

Thanks for posting guys. If this post does not help clarify any lingering
confusion caused by my earlier post, feel free to ask me about it.
Hopefully, this will do the trick! :-)

In the hopes that someone else might see what has worked for me so
far...this is what I have done so far. (So far because I am pausing at the
moment to do some research described further below.)

I was unable to access my computer except through safe mode. The blue
screen of death described above showed itself immediately on start up. (I
thought there might be a Norton error message prior to the blue screen, but
if there is one, it is gone in a flash.) Even in safe mode, the System
restore would not function. (When you enter safe mode, the computer asks you
if you would rather attempt a system restore. When I would click the
appropriate box, the computer would say it failed to restore.)

I went, through safe mode, and downloaded and then attempted to use the
Norton removal tool available from Symantec. This tool would not run for me
in safe mode.

At that point, I went to msconfig (in safe mode) and disabled all obvious
Norton related entries in the Services and the Startup Tabs. At this point I
attempted to restart the computer. However, the blue screen remained.

Next, I returned to safe mode and again attempted to use system restore.
This time my computer was able to restore to a prior date. Relief!

I have periodically started up the computer and then shut it down just to
ensure I do not fall prey to the old "fool me once" electronic trick. (You
know, where the computer works the first time you think you've corrected the
problem, and then the next time someone uses it, the problem reappears.

My next move is going to be to use the norton removal tool to, hopefully,
clear the problem away.

Now, I am contemplating attempting a fresh install of Norton Internet
Security. However, the person that guided me through the above process has a
negative opinion of the application and suggested I might pass on it and try
something else.

At this point I would welcome comments discussing the application(s) you use
to secure your home machines. Many opinions are always better! Polling the
audience, as it were! :-)

Also, if I rely entirely on web based email, how important is the email
related services in Norton (or other applications), such as Anti Spam? Are
these internet security services not really needed and I am simply suffering
from an overexercised sense of caution?

Thanks.

HI JJ,
It is to early to conclude that NIS is the fault, try to look in the Event
Viewer to see the History of Error messages on this Machine and see what
caused it and start to troubleshoot.
It is easy to say yes it is NIS, but NIS could be the Victim of another bad
programs or Hardware drives that not compatible with Windows.
Clean up First then install NIS and see if the problem come back, if it did
then you know it is NIS at fault and the nearest Bin get the honor!!.
Also back up you may End up doing a clean install,as it is the best for long
future usability and performance.

HTH.
