Thanks but still no luck. I can get the 1a pack to unpack to a
directory on C: but when I go to the update subdirectory and try to run
update.exe it pops open an install window and then immediately closes
it. I tried to use the update.msi file but it tells me that I need to
do a "machine assigned" distribution and I have no idea how to do that
or even what it means.
I trued the sp2 and had the problem that it would unpack to a second
harddrive that I have and then immediately delete the directory for me.
That is why I am trying for sp1a, at least I get to keep the unpacked
files.
Thanks,
Simon

Perhaps someone can help me.
I have XP Pro, I have downloaded the file xpsp1a_en_x86.exe and
when I run it it just seems to unpack to a directory that it
subsequently deletes.
How does one actually install sp1a? What do I do with the downloaded
file?
Any help appreciated, thanks.First - why Service Pack 1a instead of Windows XP Service Pack 2?After all - it's not supported any longer:http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean19
To download the proper file:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx
You need to have enough space to unpack AND install the service pack.
For more information on what to expect:http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/spdeploy.mspx
However - I suggest you download and install Service Pack 2.
