Re: Fail to start, turn off and reinstall System Restore

Tech Tip: Click here to run a free scan for Windows Errors and optimize PC performance

Hi Bert. Thanks for you help.

I have run System Restore in Safe Mode but that didn't solve the problem.
Then I followed the tips in http://bertk.mvps.org/index.html, and did the
following, but the problem wasn't solved either:

1. Windows Update completed
2. Virus and Spyware scanned with up-to-date definition
3. Event Viewer failed to load with error message saying unable to
initialize CLSID:{975797FC-4E2A-11D0-B702-00C04FD8DBF7}
4. “Task Scheduler” is running but “System Restore Service” is not, but
unable to start the System Restore Service with error code: 1114 (DLL
initialization procedure failed)
5. Free Disk Space enough
6. Cannot adjust Disc Space Used by System Restore to below 12% (anywhere
along the bar except the maximum 12% cannot activate the Apply button)
7. Unable to start System Restore Wizard therefore cannot create a test
restore point
8. Unable to turn off System Restore with error message saying error occured
when system restore tried to start or stop some drives and asked me to
restart my machine and try again.
9. System Restore reinstalled

Should I do Repair Install? But I don't have the XP Home CD. My XP Home is
preinstalled with my notebook which is manufactured by NEC. Can I still do
Repair Install without the XP Home CD?

Your opinion will be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

*Fail to start System Restore wizard*
During System Restore, my computer failed to shut down, hence forcing
me to
press the power off button to turn off the computer. After turning on
the
computer, an error message appeared saying System Restore failed and
asked me
to do it again. But when I tried to run System Restore again, an error
message came out saying System Restore cannot protect my computer and
asked
me to restart my computer and run System Restore again. Same problem
occured
after restarting the computer and run System Restore.

*Fail to turn off System Restore*
Then I tried to turn off the System Restore to turn it on later, but
failed.
When I checked the turn off box and press ok, an error message
appeared
saying error occured when system restore tried to start or stop some
drives
and asked me to restart my machine and try again. Same thing happened
after
restarting the computer.

*Reinstalling System Restore doesn't resolve the problem*
After reinstalling System Restore by running "rundll32.exe
advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection C:\Windows\Inf\sr.inf", I still cannot
open the
System Restore wizard with the same error message as before saying
System
Restore cannot protect my computer and asked me to restart my computer
and
run System Restore again.

I'm quite desparate now. Please help. Thanks very much.
