Ron: I hope you read this update. It will be informative to you.
Number 1: I agree totally with you. HP tech reps are the biggest brain
dead, useless protozoa.
Number 2: Microsoft tech support helped me with this issue by having me run
system restore in safe mode. It worked. When I went into normal mode and
tried it afterwards, it failed. I then switched back to Windows Update from
Microsoft Update and the problem was gone! After all is said and done, I
wasn't able to do system restore so long as I was using Microsoft Update and
as soon as I switched back, everything seems to be working exactly right.
Although the problem may still be dormant and not for a moment do I
underestimate your knowledge, it appears to me that it was ms office updates
that was causing system restore to become un-operational. And yes, of course
I would choose to use ms updates without having to switch back and forth but
I can't. I have third party ms office on the computer and maybe this is why
it's not operating at its potential capacity.

Can anyone advise as to how I can get system restore to work? When I try
to roll back to a restore point, it fails. This is a brand new computer (3
weeks) and Hewlett Packard is totally usesless and has done nothing to help
me. They tell me that this is a Microsoft issue (which it probably is but
they're supposed to know how to assist me with correcting this malfunction
and are essentially telling me now that I bought their product, tuff sh*t.)
I've already had to have a complete system recovery done on this computer
because the moment I turned it on, it wasn't working right and the computer
tech. I brought it to, suggested this would fix things....or a good starting
point to make the necessary corrections.
Only one time (out of many attempts) after doing a system restore, I
received the following message: "Windows - Registry Recovery. One of the
files containing system registry data had to be recovered by use of a log or
alternate copy. The recovery was susscessful." But it still isn't working.
ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN HELP ME?
Next time the dickheads from HP Tech Support give you that "Microsoft
problem" BS ask to speak to a Supervisor.
Tell him that under the terms of the OEM licensing agreement Hewlett
Packard has agreed to assume all responsibilities for end user support
and product warranty with regard to the OEM versions of Windows that
they sell.
Therefore this is a Hewlett Packard problem and you want it fixed, not
now but right now. And if they are not willing to fix it you want an
immediate and complete refund of the money you paid for the computer
plus compensation for the time you have wasted trying to fix their
problem.
And if the supervisor will not give you a satisfactory answer then ask
to speak to his/her supervisor and keep escalating until you get
results.
Good luck
