Thanks Wesley! Both articles played a part in my finding the solution.
The first article introduced me to ShellExView, without which I couldn't
have resolved this. The 2nd article (Network enabled...) is the one that
led me to the problem. There was a shell extension which was NOT a Menu
Context extension, but another type of extension that was pointing to a
network UNC that no longer existed.

I've read KB article 819101 and changed the Effects setting described in
the article in my display settings, but this did not resolve my problem.
The symptoms are exactly as described in the article, but the article is
old (2003) and the problem still exists.
Any ideas?
