You are prompted to insert a Windows XP SP2 CD when you try to run the
System File Checker tool on a Windows XP SP2-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900910
Paste: %windir%\ServicePackFiles into Start | Run and click OK.
Does the folder open?

I did have that Pro problem but followed a KB article instructions,
changed registry and that one went away. However, the insert Windows XP
SP2 CD message has not responded to a prescribed registry change. I will
search for the article and post the number when I recover it.
The change was in
Registry/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/ServicePackSourcePath where Data
was changed to %windir%ServicePackFiles

What article?
If you have XP Home and it asks for your XP Pro CD, see this KB
article...

I have made a change in the registry as recommended by a MS Knowledge
Base article. However I continue to get a request for the
reinstallation CD. The system then refuses to recognize the CD and
continues to ask for it.
I am trying to use SCANNOW. Does anybody know a solution to this
problem?
