Corrupted system files

Hi
This morning while doing a search in Explorer, I got an error message
saying that Explorer had to shut down which it proceeded to do leaving
me with a blank desktop.
Luckily, Task Manager was still working which allowed me to reboot.
However, after rebooting, the desktop STILL remained completely devoid
of icons and taskbars.
I used the Task Manager to launch sfc /scannow which fortunately fixed
the problem.
However, this is the third time in two weeks I have had to repair
corrupted system files for various reasons. My computer is 3.5 years
old and for three years I had never even took the reinstallation CD
(now required by sfc /scannow) out of its wrapper.
Does this indicate that something on this computer, other than the
user, is showing signs of aging or can a more rectifiable malaise be
diagnosed?
TIA
Paul
