How do I get rid of the star in my taskbar?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Ever since I last ran Windows Update I've acquired a star in my taskbar
telling me that support for SP1 ends in October. Is there any way to remove
this (without installing SP2)? I've tried SP2 before and had major problems
with it. Thanks.
