Let's see now . . .
I installed the latest hp Image Zone (which is v 1.5, by the way, not v 5 as
one of your recommended documents suggest.), did the regedit, and shut down
the offending Verclsid.exe. The affected machines DO both have local hp
printers with card slots, so I was hopeful, but no dice. I'm still getting
the same behaviors.
Neither machine has an NVIDIA graphics card.
I'm going to try uninstalling the security update 908531, if only to confirm
it is the problem. I know enough to then check for a lingering copy of
Verclsid.exe and delete it. Should I be looking for anything else to make
this a valid confirmation of the source of my problem?
Or is there something else I can try?
By the way, your link http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm doesn't
work for some reason.
Many thanks for whatever help you can offer.

| As for the original Office glitches - which may somehow be related, for all
| I know - they include the following:
|
| *An Open dialog box from ANY Office application locks up when I either click
| the folder dropdown or 2click a folder in the window.
|
| *The Address dropdown in Internet Explorer locks up also.
|
| *These lockups generate the "(Not Responding)" message in the title bar and
| the Unresponsive Application dialog.
|
| *Files can still be opened in Office applications through Windows Explorer.
| They can also be Saved and Saved As.
|
| *Word (and only Word, so far) opens after every boot with a message that
| normal.dot has been changed - "Do you want to open it?" Even after clicking
| No, every new Word document comes with four macros I can't identify. They are
| all uneditable, unviewable ("Project locked"), and undeletable. Their names
| are:
|
| AddToDXTGViaMenu, AutoExec, AutoExit, and OpenDXTG
|
| We're on Server 2003 with XP Professional on every station. So far, only two
| stations are so affected. They may have both opened the same e-mail
| attachment just prior to all these problems, but can't be sure. Repairing &
