Hi,
Let's change the SourcePath in the registry. This should force Window to
look at the i386 folder.
Open the registry by going to Start - Run and type regedit then press
enter.
Navagate to the following registry keys and locate the
SourcePath
value in the right pane and double click on it. Change the Value date to
C:\i386 then press OK.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup
It may also be necessary to change the ServicePackSourcePath in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion

Hi I appreciate all the time you have spent on this question. But I
keep getting asked for the windows xp sp2 cd to be inserted. Can't
proceed with anything once the sp2 cd is requested. I was thinking
about deleting the hard drive and reinstalling windows.
thanks again

Ok, lets try this again.
During the install process it may be necessary to browse back to the
i386 folder several times.
If this does not work then place the downloaded SP2 file
(WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe) in the root of C:\ and use the
following command to extract it's contents.
C:\XP-SP2\WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe -x
If you don't browse to a new location, a new i386 folder will be
created in the root of C:\ with all the SP2 files in it. I would
also suggest burning the i386 folder to a CD for save keeping.
Reinstall System Restore and browse to the new i386 folder.

I followed your steps as indicated and could only find one i386
folder. Expanding the file folders did reveal the sr.inf folder.
As before the installing files were halted because I do not have a
Windows Xp Sp2 CD. I have Windows XP with SP2 downloaded from
Microsoft. I have ordered a sp2 cd from Microsoft. Thanks for all
your info.

There could be more than one i386 folder on the system.
Set the system to show hidden and system folders. Go to the Control
Panel - Folder Options, and on the View tab, set the options so you
can see hidden and system files:
Enable (check) "Display the contents of system folders"
Enable (check) "Show hidden files and folders"
Disable (uncheck) "Hide protected operating system files
(recommended)" Disable (uncheck) "hide extensions for known file
types".
Go to Start
Search
All files and folder
All or part of the file name
Expand "More advanced options" and check next to the following
three options:
(check) Search system folders
(check) Search hidden files folders
(check) Search subfolders
And do a search for i386.

Yes i did point to the i386 file on the hard drive to install.
The Copying Files window keeps asking for the Windows Home Edition
Service Pack 2 Files to be inserted. I do not have that Cd. Is
that the Service Pack cd i can order from Microsoft as you
suggested. Your info is appreciated and I am trying to understand
this. Thank you

When the install asks for the sr.sys file point it to the i386
folder on the drive. That's where the installation files are
located.

Hello again and thank you for your response. The windows
folder did open and did display. Located the sr folder and
right clicked to install. However sr.sys needs xp home edition
with service pack cd is needed. That is not the cd i have. My
cd is from 2001 for windows xp home edition. although i do
have sp2 installed through a download. and the i386 files are
installed cause i seen the folder. So i guess i was unable to
do the install.
After that i did reboot windows and check the system restore
tool and still getting the same message. thanks again
