XP shutsdown immediately after startup

I hope someone can help with this...
- When I start Windows, the system starts to shutdown straight away
with the "NT authority\system - Remote Procedure Call Service was
terminated unexpectedly" countdown message. I can stop this with the
command prompt. (I had this problem with the Blaster virus, but that
was pre service pack 2, and on a different machine.) The same thing
happens when starting in safe mode.
- A full virus scan with an up-to-date Avast reveals no virus. The
Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool run from CD reveals nothing.
I've even run the Symantec Blaster and Sasser removal tools. No luck
there, either.
- I have no taskbar or start button.
- My internet dialup connection is missing, so can't connect.
- System Restore doesn't work. When trying to run it, I get the message
"System restore is not able to protect your computer...". And it
doesn't work in Safe Mode with command prompt.
- The system takes several minutes to start up - long stall on the
"Windows is starting up" screen.
I have Windows XP, Service Pack 2 - does anyone have any ideas! Many
many thanks,
Richard
.
