Help!! Safe Mode has slowed down PC

Hi,
A few weeks ago my sister noticed that my PC was extra slow. After the
login, the applications took forever to load and it would take about
5-10 minutes just to open Internet Explorer. This has never happened
before and after speaking to my boyfriend, he suggested that I restart
my PC in Safe Mode b/c I probably had a virus on my PC that caused the
slow performance.
I took his advice and restarted my PC in Safe Mode. However, the Safe
Mode never worked and I never got a chance to log back into my PC. Now
whenever I turn on my PC, it would be stuck and nothing happens. I
usually get frustrated and just turn it off.
Please help. Any ideas on how I can bypass the Safe Mode to put my PC
back to normal or should I take it somewhere to get it fixed?
Desperate to use home PC again!
Thanks for any help & advice.
