In addition to the copy of srclient.dll in the servicepackfiles/i386 directory there is also a copy in C:\windows \system 32\ directory, although that could be a copy of a file which is part of the System Restore problem. However, I would copy the file to the i386 directory and then try Bert's procedure again. It is worth a try.
If it doesn't work order a free copy of the Windows XP SP2 CD on line. It will take a few days to reach you by post but it should resolve your problem be useful if you have further problems involving SP2.

I can't get berts procedure to reinstall system restore to work.
1. I have done as directed regarding the folders and making the files viewable etc.
2. The problem I keep having now is after right clicking on sr.inf and
selecting install, the 'file needed' box opens, and I then do the next
step and 'browse' and select the ServicePackFiles directory and then
the i386 directory. It lists the sr.sys file that it is looking for and
I select 'open' and then 'ok', it then 'copying files' but then a box
with 'copy error' pops up containing text saying 'setup is unable to
copy the file srclient.dll' and some other text asking me to 'ensure
the location specified below is ok or insert the WindowsXP Home Edition
ServicePack 2 cd'...
3. I don't have a sp2 cd as sp2 was done thru the download from windows
and pointing to the servicepackfiles/i386 directory gives me the error.
If I skip that file another error occurs for the next .dll file it is
looking for but all these .dll files are in the servicepackfiles/i386
directory and each one is displayed in the 'locate file' box that pops
up for each as I go through the process.
I don't know how to get Windows to 'see' each file as I have set the 'folder', 'view' settings as directed.
Is there something basic I am doing wrong in running the sr.sys install
process?
Gerry Cornell Wrote:Make sure you can see hidden files by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Folder Options, View, Advanced Settings and verify that the box
before
"Show hidden files and folders" is checked and "Hide protected
operating system files " is unchecked. You may need to scroll down to
see the second item. You should also make certain that the box
before
"Hide extensions for known file types" is not checked.
Then as Bert Kinney suggests try reinstalling System Resto http://bertk.mvps.org/html/tips.html#ReinstallSR
Next check which drives System Restore is monitoring. It should only be your C drive. Turn off monitoring of any other drives, which may be listed.
Right click on your My computer icon on your Desktop and select
Properties, System Restore. Place the cursor on D drive, click on
Settings and check the box before "Turn off System Restore on
this drive" and return to the screen upon which Settings appears. Next
place the cursor on your C drive select Settings but this time find
the
slider and drag it to the left until it reads 5% and exit. When you
get
to the Settings screen click on. Apply and OK and exit. Finally run
Disk
CleanUp to remove Temporary
Internet Files and the Disk Defragmenter on your C drive.
Now check whether System Restore is working.

Primary Drive is C:
A 160gb Maxter ata100 2mb buffer with 1 partition for the whole drive.
Secondary Drive is D:
A 60gb Maxter ata100 2mb buffer with 1 partition for the whole drive.
Not sure I am understanding what info you want if that isn't it?
The 'filesaver' event was caused by an energizer ups I recently installed including software and then removed. I edited the registry to clean all references to it and now there are NO ERRORS in the event logger, however, system restore still gives the same problem when I click on it, that being:
A box pops up "System Restore Application, System restore application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience....."
I click on the link in the box and another box pops up:
"System Restore Application - Error Signature AppName: rstrui.exe AppVer. 5.1.2600.2180 ModName: srrstr.dll ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 00009826 To view technical information about the error report click here..."

I followed Microsofts instructions for this most recent error and type the following at the command prompt:
sc query FileSaver_Service
and it spit back:
Service_Name: FileSaver_Service Type: 10 Win32_Own_Process State: 1 Stopped (NotStoppable,NotPausable,IgnoresShutdown) Win32_exit_code: 1084 (0X43c) Service_exit_code: 0 (0X0) Checkpoint: 0X0 Wait_hint: 0X0
Is this any help?
djenning Wrote: You got me thinking so I reinstalled a former hd and I don't have the disk error in the event anymore, don't have the 104 error for the srservice anymore either but system restore still does the same error when I try to use it. Also now have a different error and there are many 'information' events listing service control manager and a variety of numbers.
As far as the hd it was a 160gb maxtor hd , ata100, formated w NTPS format in one partition. has always been. The 2nd drive was a 60gb maxtor ata 100 formated NTPS and one partition. Also, although no other hd is listed under Hard Disk Drives in My Computer, in the device manager if I turn on my photosmart hp printer it lists the card reader as a Disk drive.
Most recent error :
Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7000 Date: 10/11/2005 Time: 6:06:34 PM User: N/A Computer: JENNINGS-O4H0QH Description: The FileSaver_Service service failed to start due to the following error: The system cannot find the file specified.
