You are the MAN! Thank you so much for this thorough, thoughtful analysis
and help. The comments on the log file are especially useful - I'll figure
out how to keep more items from running.

Unfortunately, I still have the prob with defrag. I quit everything
(including google desktop, from the sys tray) before doing the defrag. I
even followed the instructions left by Andrew E. following your post.
Nothing works, and I am still at 28% fragmented.

If you have any other thoughts on how to defrag .pst files, please pass them
along.
