How do you expect him to use system restore with out been able to
logon? and what evidance do you have to proov "one way of keeping it
running better and logon better is SP2"?

No, you shouldnt need to reinstall, insted press ctrl+alt+del twice on
the welcome screen, type in administrator as user name and admin
password, then do that fix that I will look up when I have a spare
min.
