"System" Process hogging CPU, can't listen to music

I have been playing music on WinAmp, as usual, and the songs keep cutting
out, like it plays fine for a minute then there will be a half second gap...
It happens at least 30 times per song, making listening to music impossible.
I opened Task manager and noticed that whenever it happens my CPU usage goes
way up (40-60% even with no other apps open) and is assigned to the "System"
process (second last one from the bottom of the list, before "System Idle
Process"). This seems to explain the cutting out, but what is making my
"System" process do this?
I updated and ran AdAware, NAV and SpyBot, didn't help. I have an IBM
thinkpad (1 year old) with Windows XP professional, Service pack 2.
Processor is intel centrino and I have 750 MB of RAM.
Can someone at least point me in a direction I can look? Do you know of
this problem?
Thanks a million
