What error reports are being generated in Event Viewer. Note the Shell
Hardware Detection Service is dependent in the Remote Procedure Call
(RPC) service so error reports on that service may also be relevant!

Is your Windows XP Home Edition or Professional?

Have you installed all updates since SP2?
