xp explorer.exe process takes 95+% CPU

XP runs programs extremely slowly. Internet connections
and page turns are extremely slow also. explorer.exe is
consuming the vast majority of cpu time (95-99%. Have run
current virus scan, spybot, ad-aware, and cwshredder to no
avail. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
