First, I would disable the modem in Device Manager to eliminate that as
a source of the problem. From a Run command, type msconfig[enter key],
Startup Tab. Look at the checked startups, and if there is anything
relating to the dialup ISP, uncheck it. Reboot. See if that helps with
the connection (BTW, is this Ethernet or wireless to a router and
cable/dsl?)
If that does not help, Google for the two apps lspfix.exe and
winsockxpfix.exe. Run both in default mode to fix the TCP/IP stack.
