Save yourself a lot of heartache and time.

Call up the 'local technician' ask him to 'restore' the file he backed up.
If he can't ask him for your money back as the work he did is useless.

For the future, do not use 'proprietary' backup utilities without a
documented restore proceedure and / or disk.

May I recommend that you use the followinf Proceedure.
Obtain by legal methods Norton Ghost.
Create a partition on your Hard Drive, or use another Hard Drive if you have
two.
Intall Ghost and Create an 'Image File' of your total System Disk [or
partition]: that Image will be created into a new folder on the 2nd Partition
or Hard Drive.
When you initiate this process, Ghost will create a Bootable Floppy Disk.
Once finished, it will reboot, run in DOS mode, complete the Imaging and
reboot to XP. This takes 1/2 to 1 hr.
Now you have a 'Backup' of EVERYTHING, such that you can rebuild your system
environment in <1 Hr. ABout the time it would take to reinstall XP, so you
save all the time for copying data and reinstalling applications, inetrnet
settings, passwords etc. Yes it saves hours.
One can then use their CD-RW or DVD-RW and copy the image file as a second
level of security to Optical Media.

Should you need to rebuild your System, then boot off the Floppy and
'Backup' your imaged file from HDD to HDD. Should the Image file on HDD be
delete or the HDD damaged, then you have the CD / DVD to use.

Now you won't have an image / backup that is unrecognisable and uless as
.... on a bull.
