If WIA is the cause of the problem then stopping the service should cause
the problem to go away. However, that is not the solution because you still
want to use the service. However, if the problem goes away then it confirms
we are looking in the right area, although we must not forget that you may
have more than one problem. Stop the service and reboot. Recheck after
rebooting that the WIA service is still stopped.
Can you provide more details of the Sony and HP software installed. It was
HP software that caused me so much grief on my machine. The software
installed was suited to Windows 98. When I uninstalled the HP scanner
software and downloaded the software for Windows XP the problem was solved.
It was not just a matter of drivers.
