Disk access is common performance bottleneck. Think about it,
if your disk is nearly full, the remaining free space is likely
to be fragmented, and this increases the time that the disk must
seek to find each sector. Performance for components that read
from, and write to, the disk are adversely affected.

Of course, "perf issues" encompasses a wide range of topics
(hardware, software, disk activity, role of the computer, etc.).
And whether or not having a large number of unnessary files on
your hard drive effects the everyday performance of your
computer, I cannot say.

However, in my case I regularly remove files such as those listed
in the "Files such as:" list. And I have found that deleting the
10's of thousands of TIF files, temp files, Recycle Bin files,
(cr*p files), on my hard disk greatly improves the performance of
many of the tasks that I perform frequently, such as:

- Searching my hard drive using Windows Explorer, in particular,
for "A word of phrase in the file:" (which I do very frequently)

- Enumerating, and searching, directories on my local computer
from my remote computer - a 200 MHz Pentium processor and 80
Megabytes total of shared RAM (which I do very frequently)

- Using ntbackup.exe to backup my files (which I do frequently)

- Searching my hard drive using the Indexing Service and Advanced
Query Language (which I do occasionally)

- Running chkdsk (which I do occasionally)

- Running defrag (which I do occasionally)

- Cataloging my data partition, and my System Partition, using
the Indexing Service program cidaemon.exe (which Microsoft
Windows XP does automatically, during idle times)

For a few performance related reasons that Microsoft considers
monitoring disk space as important see the following Microsoft

And in regards to me asking if you are a Red Dwarf fan. You are
using the name "Prat". And while prat might be a frequently used
informal/slang term spoken in the UK and elsewhere, I am a US
citizen and have only heard the word "prat" from watching the Red
Dwarf series on PBS (Rimmer frequently uses the word prat).
