Thanks to all for their helpful suggestions. I tried to delege the pagefile.sys but it came us as file not found on my computer. Very odd. So I'm still stuck.

I'll look through the responses to see what else I can try. This problem came on very suddenly and I'm not using memory-greedy programmes, so I'm mystified.
