Low Virtual memory

I know this comes up a lot, so apologies and feel free to
roll your eyes.

A few days ago my PC started running slow and giving me low
virtual memory messages. I'm only using screenwriting
software - no games programmes. I've tried increasing the
paging file size and also tried to do a system restore but
there wasn't a restore point older than 3 days. I've also
disk cleaned and defragged.

My PC has 512 mb RAM. The hard drive is almost empty. I've
never had any problems with it until now. I read this
article: http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpvm.htm and think maybe
the page file has become corrupt as a result of a bad
shutdown (my PC sometimes hangs at shutdown). His proposed
solution is this: "In the Virtual Memory setting, set to
"No page file," then exit System Properties, shut down the
machine, and reboot. Delege PAGFILE.SYS, set the page file
up again and reboot to bring it into use."

Could some kind soul please give me idiot-proof,
step-by-step instructions as to how to do this and where to
go to carry out each step?
