Windows Repair

I tried to do a repair of my windows XP Home installation
(a long story for another post). By booting with the CD-
ROM and selecting "R" option I assumed that I would be
presnted with a GUI giving me an option to say "Repair my
Windows System Files". As it says on the tee shirt 'All I
got was a lousy C: prompt'.
I read somewhere in Windows help that the "R" option
brought up the recovery console and that I should
type "Recovery Console" at the C: prompt. This does not
work because there is no executable in the root directory
and it also does not work at the CD-ROM %prompt (same
reason).
I even tried adding Recovery Console as a boot option. I
selected it at boot up but it stopped part way through
loading (maybe because I have an on-board RAID 0
controller and it couldn't find the driver.
Help anyone??
Am I being too naive in expecting a "Repair my Windows
System Files" option? Should I just reinstall Windows
over the top of itself? But that would mean I would
delete all of the updates from Microsoft - right?
