My three week old XP Home computer that I built (hence no
tech support :-( )on occassions will get all the way to
the desktop and then immediately reboot. This problem
seemed to start happening after I ran a couple of programs
from Gibson Research (removed Instant Messenger; removed
UPnP: turned DCOM off; and disabled RAW Sockets).
It will do this one or two times and then boot normally.
It seems as if it happens when Norton Antivirus (NAV) or
Norton personal Firewall (NPF) starts to load.
I checked the event log and I get these messages:
MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM cannot be found.
DHCP (sorry cannot remember message)
I checked in sevices.msc and MSSQL$MICROSOFTBCM is set to
load "Automatically".
I also have problems with a SVCHOST.EXE process consuming
50% of my CPU cycles seemingly after these reboots (with
only NAV & NPF running). If I reboot the system then the
CPU usage at idle is 1%. The suspect SVCHOST is running
the following services:
AudioSrv; CryptSvc; Dhcp; EventSystem; lanmanworkstation;
Netman; Nla; RasMan; Schedule; SENS; SharedAccess;
ShellHWDetection; srservice; TapiSrv; TermService; Themes;
uploadmgr; W32Time; winmgmt; wuauserv

Any ideas anyone? I am getting very frustrated. I may
have screwed things up by trying to practice Safe
Computing. All I want is to get back to where I was when
I built the system - a good stable computer.
