Hi,
First, run any antispyware software to check for spywares/trojan.
Ad-aware 6.0 from lavasoftusa.com is a good choice and it is free.
Install it and update the reference files than run the software.
Delete any files it found except the alexa reg file for MS internet explorer.
Run antiVirus software with updated virus definitions to ensure your PC is free from any virus.
Go to windows update site to update all the critical patches.
Note: if any spywares/trojan/virus were found, clear all the restore points by temporary disable the restore feature on all drives. Reboot and then re-activate the restore feature.
Afterall, run disk cleanup, then run CHKDSK and then run defrag.
To add back the backup feature, you can borrow a XP Home CD from your friend, open the CD and install it from the Value Added folder.
Hope it helps.
