xp pro hangs at blue screen before logon

XP Pro installed on Dell Dimension 2400. The computer has
been up and running since Feb with no problems, the day
before yesterday it would not start up. It gets to the
screen just after the black screen and then hangs. No
error message. No new software has been installed. Last
know good configuration and safe mode gets to exactly the
same place. Tried scandisk from recovery console no
problems reported, checked for viruses and spyware and
nothing found. Any ideas what else I could try or what it
may be please?
