How much RAM memory do you have? Another way to solve any problem is to see if it is practical to go in the opposite direction. Adding RAM is frequently the right solution. If your system is using a lot of virtual memory, then unless you can make a dramatic impact by stopping programmes running unnecessarily in the background, you should consider adding memory.
