Problem with AutoUpdate Client

Hi there,
Each time I try to update my windows XP Professional,
during the installation, it just freezes, I try
downloading some of the updates from the Support websites
but some of the updates during the backing up files
(Creating a restore point) process, it freezes also, I
wait for ages but no use.

My laptop
Sony, Pentium 3 Mobile, 1GHz, 512 MB RAM, 16 MB Video Ram.
